With the different workplace emergencies that can occur, it is important for a business to develop an emergency preparedness plan. The most common type of emergency that can happen in the work place is a fire. To protect your employees in case of fire, and to prevent property loss, a business must have a fire preparedness plan.

The preparedness plan must have two essential components: an emergency action plan, and a fire prevention plan. An emergency action plan will describe what your employees must do in case a fire breaks out in the workplace, and the fire prevention plan would describe what must be done to prevent the occurrence of fire.

An emergency action plan should have the following regulations:

All personnel must understand the general procedures to be followed in case of fire. They must also take note of emergency escape routes for different areas of the building, and especially of the escape route of where they are located. There has to be a set escape route for each specific location.

The emergency action plan should also detail procedures for personnel that must stay behind to shut down equipment before evacuation. There has to be specific assignments for the employees. It is important that someone is assigned to shut down equipments and systems to prevent damage or minimize hazards.

Another importance aspect of the emergency action plan is the procedure for checking and keeping track of all the employees. This will prevent confusion and will minimize the incident when someone gets left behind inside the building.

Rescue and medical duties of specific personnel should also be explicitly stated in the action plan. The plan would need to define what those duties are.

Preferred ways of reporting the fire and other types of emergencies should also be part of the emergency action plan. The personnel must also be made aware of how the emergency will be reported.

An alarm system must be put in place to alert the in-house fire fighting team or fire brigade members, and at the same time to alert the employees of the emergency. A warning system must be made known and familiar to all employees.

Different types of evacuation plans should also be described in the action plan. There should be systems to alert the employees of the areas to be evacuated, and where they should be evacuated.

A list of names and contact numbers of employees must also be part of the plan in case additional information or explanation of duties would be required.

Fire wardens, or personnel that are designated and trained to assist in evacuation of other personnel, must be assigned.
